Am I A Candidate For Breast Revision?

Anyone healthy enough to undergo elective surgery who has previously had breast surgery and is dissatisfied with the look and/or feel of their breasts is a good candidate for breast revision surgery.
While most of our Boston breast revision patients are women with implants, occasionally, men who have had gynecomastia surgery will want a secondary procedure.

What Is Breast Revision?

A breast revision, or secondary breast surgery, is any aesthetic breast surgery done for someone who has previously had aesthetic breast surgery. While breast implants can last for years, they are not considered lifetime devices, meaning that many people who have breast augmentation with implants will want or need to have another surgery related to their implants sometime in the future.
There are a number of reasons why women may consider breast revision surgery. Some of the most common are:

Implant rupture:

Very rarely, the breast implant shell can break. This is called implant rupture and it can occur in both saline and silicone implants. In saline implants, implant rupture is obvious because the breast will lose volume and deflate. With silicone implants, however, rupture can be suspected by examination and diagnosed through imaging. Although the silicone gel used today does not leak into the body if the implant ruptures, we nonetheless recommend that patients have their implants removed and new ones placed, if desired.

Complications:

Breast augmentation surgery is not without risk, and one of the most common complications is called capsular contracture. Capsular contracture occurs when the capsules that form around all breast implants become thick, firm, and contract around the implant. This condition can cause the breast to feel firm and the implant to move high on the chest wall. It can also cause pain and discomfort. When this happens, we recommend that the capsule and implant be removed and the implant is replaced.

Cosmetic enhancement:

Some women who choose breast revision surgery simply want a new implant size, shape, or type. Other women who have aesthetic breast surgery such as a breast lift and/or breast augmentation, will want a second surgery to “refresh” their results. This is particularly true for women who experience weight loss, pregnancy or aging after their first breast surgery. And some women who may not have been happy with their initial cosmetic result choose a secondary breast procedure to achieve a different outcome.

Breast Revision Surgery

Just like any other breast procedure, your breast revision surgery will be performed while you are under general anesthesia.
The length of surgery will depend on your particular needs, including the type of breast surgery you are having, if there is a complication present (such as capsular contracture), and whether you are having more than one breast procedure performed (such as a breast lift with augmentation).

During breast revision surgery Boston plastic surgeon, Dr. Tantillo will use precise surgical techniques to minimize blood loss and reduce the risk of complications. If your breast implants are being replaced, your old implants will be removed and new implants will be inserted. If a breast lift or reduction is chosen, your surgeon will remove excess skin and fat and tighten and reposition the breasts to create a more youthful appearance.

Breast revision surgery can be a complex, difficult procedure to perform. That’s why it’s critically important that you choose a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Tantillo for your procedure. Dr. Tantillo often sees patients who have received breast surgery elsewhere and are not happy with their results. His training, education, and experience ensure that you receive a safe procedure that will leave you looking and feeling your best.

Recovery And Results

After your procedure, you will be closely monitored to ensure that you are healing and recovering well. You will come back to the office for follow-up visits so that your Boston breast revision surgeon can monitor your progress and address any questions or concerns you may have.
Your recovery time after breast revision surgery will vary depending on the extent of your procedure. However, unless combined with other procedures, breast revision surgery is an outpatient procedure and you are generally able to resume non-strenuous activities 7 to 10 days after surgery. Drains are sometimes used in implant revision surgery to remove fluid buildup and minimize swelling. It’s important that you have someone to help you for the first few days after your breast revision.

Rest is encouraged to help your body heal, although you should be able to perform most daily tasks right away – such as showering, brushing your teeth, and other general grooming. Light walking during the first 1-2 weeks of your recovery can also be beneficial to improve blood circulation and facilitate healing. After about 6 weeks, your swelling should be almost completely resolved and you will be able to see the results of your procedure. Your scars may still be pink or red but will improve over time, and should fade significantly by 1 year. Clareo Plastic Surgery serves patients from all over the Boston area including Newton, Needham Brookline, and more.

Breast Revision FAQs

A breast revision is any aesthetic breast surgery for a patient who has had aesthetic breast surgery in the past. Most often, breast revision is performed for patients who have previously had breast implant surgery. Reasons patients want a breast revision include to change implant size and/or to lift the breasts, typically after having children. Revision is also performed to treat capsular contracture, implant malposition, or implant leak.

Often drains are necessary after breast revision surgery. They typically remain in place for five to seven days after surgery. The drains are removed in the office at a postoperative visit.
The cost of breast revision varies widely from patient to patient, and thus the costs also vary. Sometimes an implant manufacturer warranty is available to defray some of the costs.
