Liposuction in the Boston area

Excess fat deposits can be a persistent source of frustration, despite efforts to maintain a healthy lifestyle. If you’ve struggled with stubborn pockets of fat in areas such as the hips, outer thighs, upper arms, stomach, waist, flanks, back, or under the chin, our Boston liposuction may offer an effective solution. With the expertise of an experienced plastic surgeon, liposuction in Boston can sculpt and refine your body, helping you achieve a more contoured silhouette.

The Four Ts Of Liposuction Is Lipo The Clareo Way!

Liposuction at Clareo Plastic Surgery is truly a blend of art and science. Our renowned surgical team of Dr. Christopher Lee and Dr. Michael Tantillo blends the latest in liposuction techniques, such as SAFE® Lipo and High Definition Liposuction, with the latest liposuction technology, including radio frequency and laser liposuction. Skin tightening, and fat transfer are adjunct procedures that can be performed as well.

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat cells. Once removed, the fat cells do not grow back. However, fat cells do not have a limit as to how much they can enlarge. Unlike diet and exercise, liposuction targets subcutaneous fat or the fat that lies just underneath the skin. During the operation, our Boston liposuction surgeons use a cannula to break up the fat cells, which they remove through a hollow suction tube. After liposuction, the treated areas take on a slimmer appearance, dialing up your confidence and making it easier to wear your preferred clothing styles. Liposuction will not change your ability to gain or lose weight. Liposuction will change your fat distribution, which means that the treated areas will always have fewer fat cells. If you maintain your weight, your liposuction results will last many years.

"Use Fat, Don't Lose Fat!"

SAFE®Lipo

The Secret to the Smoothest Liposuction Results

Clareo surgeons use SAFE®Lipo to avoid skin rippling and contour irregularities—one of the most common cosmetic defects associated with older liposuction techniques. As with all liposuction, we first inject tumescent fluid into the area to minimize bruising and bleeding. A specially designed cannula is used to Separate the fat cells from surrounding tissues. A fat extraction cannula is then used attached to suction to Aspirate the fat from the body. Finally, a specially designed cannula is used for Fat Equalization to smooth out the treated area. The SAFE® liposuction technique allows Clareo surgeons to maximize the amount of fat removed.

High-Definition Liposuction

Get Your Chiseled Look

With High-Definition liposuction, our surgeons use liposuction to create valleys and shadows to highlight muscle groups; the abs and obliques are most commonly highlighted with High-Def liposuction. High-Def Lipo gives an etched, athletic appearance to the body.

Liposuction Technology

BeautiFill® Laser Liposuction

Our BeautiFill® system uses a laser cannula at a particular laser wavelength to gently free fat cells from the surrounding tissue. This is the same principle as SAFE® Liposuction; however, the laser technology more gently dislodges the fat cells, which has two primary benefits. BeautiFill® liposuction is more gentle, and therefore most cases can be done in the office with just oral sedatives and local anesthesia, thus avoiding the operating room. The gently dislodged fat cells are excellent for fat transfer, and BeautiFill® liposuction enjoys a very high percentage of fat graft take.

BodyTite® Liposuction

Our BodyTite® platform uses radiofrequency energy to maximally tighten skin after liposuction. The radiofrequency energy tightens collagen attaching the skin to the muscle, thus pulling the skin into the muscle. Morpheus® microneedling is combined with BodyTite® and serves to shrink the surface area of the skin. The three-step process of BodyTite®, liposuction, and Morpheus® removes fat and tightens skin. BodyTite® can be combined with BeautiFill® in order to harvest fat for transfer.

Liposuction Skin Tightening

All liposuction will cause some skin tightening. However, maximal skin tightening is achieved by adding radiofrequency energy to heat and tighten the collagen beneath the skin, done primarily with BodyTite®, and the collagen within the skin, done primarily with Morpheus® microneedling. Taken together, these modalities pull the skin into the muscle and shrink the skin itself.

Liposuction Fat Transfer

Clareo’s BeautiFill® system gently harvests fat for transfer. Fat removed from one area of the body can be used to enhance and rejuvenate other areas of the body, including the face, breasts, buttocks, and hands. One of Clareo’s newest and most exciting uses of fat transfer is muscle enhancement. Fat transfer can be used to bring bulk and definition to the traps, pecs, deltoids, biceps, triceps, and really most any muscle group.
Dr Lee’s message to liposuction patients: Liposuction has come a long way in the past 10 years with new technologies and techniques that help you get the body you have always wanted. Additionally, the use of fat to augment not only the breast and butt, but also musculature of the shoulders, arms, chest, torso, and legs has greatly enhanced to get the overall “fit” physique that screams “BODY GOALS!!!” Liposuction subtraction with fat transfer addition are great tools to help both women and men achieve the feminine silhouette, or the muscular build that you could never get with diet and exercise alone.
Dr Tantillo’s message to liposuction patients: Liposuction is one of the most powerful operations plastic surgeons perform; either as a stand-alone procedure or combined with other procedures. The addition of energy-based technology, radiofrequency and laser, only make the results better and possibilities endless. With liposuction, high-definition liposuction, and fat transfer we have tools to give patients unbelievable results – we can restore youth, vitality, and athleticism.

What Are The Benefits Of Liposuction?

You go to the gym, eat well, and take care of your appearance. Yet despite your best efforts, certain areas of your body retain fat, making it challenging to look good in clothes or show off your figure. When a healthy lifestyle is not enough to smooth out your bumps and rolls, liposuction may be the answer.
Getting rid of stubborn fat that resists diet and exercise can be a huge relief for patients that count every calorie and put in grueling hours at the gym to no avail. Liposuction can be highly rewarding for most patients, allowing them to finally accomplish their body goals. Liposuction puts the final touches on your physique so you can feel good in your skin and flaunt your body in any outfits you choose. As a convenient outpatient procedure, you can return home the same day and start seeing your early results over the coming weeks. Serious risks are rare, and the payoff is well worth the expense for most patients that choose Clareo Plastic Surgery for their Boston liposuction procedure.

At Clareo Plastic Surgery, we strive to deliver the best liposuction Boston has to offer, so when you choose our practice, you can expect:

  • A slimmer, sleeker physique

  • Fitting comfortably in a wide array of clothing styles

Your Liposuction Options

What areas can Liposuction treat?

Our power-assisted liposuction can reshape all areas of the body. Some of the most commonly treated body parts include:

Abdomen

Flat and Toned

While liposuction cannot treat visceral fat, it can treat those troublesome bulges that tend to accumulate on the abdomen. Both men and women frequently choose liposuction on their abdomens to achieve a flatter abdomen and slimmer waistlineReducing fat on the tummy and sides helps eliminate a “spare tire” or “muffin top” for a leaner appearance.

Flanks

No More Muffin Top

The flanks are another concern for many of our Boston liposuction patients. Also known as “love handles,” both men and women are predisposed to store fat on the sides of the abdomen toward the lumbar region on the lower back. Eliminating fat from this area results in a more flattering appearance when you wear swimwear and form-fitting clothes. Liposuction removes this unwanted fat for good, making you look leaner.

Back

Iron Out Back Fat and Bra Rolls

If you have excess fat deposits on your upper, mid, or lower back, you are not alone. It can be difficult to target these areas with exercise and dieting. Liposuction offers a promising solution. Liposuction easily smooths out bulges or rolls on the back that fail to respond to lifestyle changes. It is also an excellent option for women that want to eliminate bra rolls or pesky bumps of fat that peek out around the bra line. Liposuction not only gives bras, swimwear, and clothing a smoother fit, but it can also enhance the visibility of the back muscles you worked so hard to build in the gym.

Hips

Get the Hourglass Figure

Many women store fat on their hips, causing them to look wider or appear bottom-heavy. Our Boston liposuction surgeons shape more sculpted, slimmer hips and sides to draw in the waistline, creating an hourglass figure.

Thighs

Slim Legs Look Great on You

Pear-shaped individuals often complain of excess thigh fat, which can give the body a bulky appearance and cause the thighs to rub together. At Clareo Plastic Surgery, our liposuction specialists routinely treat inner and outer thigh fat to sculpt legs with a shapely, lean appearance. Surgical fat reduction promotes a streamlined lower body and may reduce friction and discomfort caused by the thighs rubbing together during walking and exercise.

Chest

A Chiseled Chest

Most people agree that a firm, flat chest is a desirable masculine trait. Men afflicted with gynecomastia (also colloquially known as “man boobs”) may benefit from lipolysis, which can also be used during male breast reduction. Chest liposuction works well as a standalone procedure or in tandem with gynecomastia surgery, which removes the breast gland. Reducing chest fat gives many men the confidence to go shirtless and stop hiding enlarged breasts with layers of clothing. Liposuction can remove this fat for good and create a flat, firm chest

Neck and Chin

Say Goodbye to a Double Chin and Turkey Neck

A sharp jawline and elegant neck are on many patients’ wishlists. However, a turkey neck and submental adipose tissue (double chin), or fat beneath the chin, are challenging for some people to overcome with diet and exercise alone. With neck and chin liposuction in Boston, our surgeons can artistically shape a more defined jawline and youthful neck for you. Liposuction also pairs well with facelift and neck lift surgery for more complete results.

Am I A Candidate For Liposuction?

Liposuction is excellent for removing fat pockets from areas such as the neck, chin, arms, chest, back, love handles, abdomen, thighs, and knees. Any adult within 25 percent of their optimal weight may consider the procedure. At our plastic surgery practice, we often see patients for liposuction of the abdomen, flanks (love handles), back, hips, thighs, bra roll, chest (in men), and neck. Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure and is not recommended for individuals who are hoping to lose a large amount of weight.
That said, liposuction is not suitable for everyone. Pregnant or nursing women and smokers are not the best candidates. Patients with certain health conditions such as bleeding disorders, diabetes, respiratory, or cardiovascular diseases must be carefully screened to determine their eligibility. At Clareo Plastic Surgery, your safety is our top priority.

Consultation and Preparation

During your consultation for liposuction Boston plastic surgeons Dr. Tantillo and Dr. Lee will determine if the procedure is a good option for you. You will have an opportunity to pinpoint your areas of concern. Our surgical staff will review your medical history and relevant lifestyle factors with you to make sure liposuction is a good fit for your needs. We will also provide details about what to expect before, during, and after your surgery. Finally, we will inform you of all the possible risks and complications so you can make an informed decision before moving forward.

Planning Your Surgery

If you are eligible for liposuction, you will receive a customized treatment plan designed with your unique goals and anatomy in mind. Our patient coordinator will provide you with a consent form and a price quote before you go home. We understand that you probably have many questions, and it can be hard to remember everything you wanted to ask during your consultation. You are welcome to contact us at any time should any questions come to mind after your appointment. When you feel ready to book the surgery, our office is just a phone call away.

Preparing for Liposuction

After booking a surgery date and time that is convenient for you, our staff will give you a list of pre-operative instructions. To prepare for your upcoming surgery, you may need to adjust prescription medications, quit smoking, and stop taking certain dietary supplements and Vitamin E. You may also need to arrange a ride to and from our private surgical center, depending on the type of anesthesia you will receive.

Surgery Day

Plan to arrive at your surgical appointment freshly bathed and wearing loose, comfortable clothes. Patients undergoing general anesthesia should not wear makeup, nail polish, moisturizer, perfumes, or deodorants. Please leave valuables such as jewelry at home. Our nurse will screen you for pregnancy during your intake appointment.

Liposuction is performed in about 1 to 2 hours using either general or local anesthetic (depending on the location and size of the treatment area). The procedure involves injecting a small amount of tumescent fluid into the areas where fat is going to be removed.

The tumescent solution makes fat removal easier so that less manual force is needed to break apart the fat cells. This helps reduce bruising and swelling after surgery and can help make your recovery easier. After the tumescent fluid is injected, Dr. Tantillo will use a thin, hollow tube – called a cannula – to suction away unwanted fat. Different sizes and shapes of cannulas may be used in order to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing result. Our Boston plastic surgeons have many years of experience performing tumescent liposuction. Their refined skill and surgical expertise ensure that your results look smooth and slim.

Can I Combine Liposuction With Other Aesthetic Procedures?

Liposuction is a customizable procedure. It pairs well alongside other body contouring operations, including tummy tucks, mommy makeovers, breast augmentation, facelifts and more. Combination procedures allow patients to reap the most reward from their time in the office. It may also save money and condense your downtime to a single recovery period.

BodyTite

If you have minimal skin laxity and stubborn fat, our surgeon may suggest combining BodyTite and liposuction. BodyTite also works well as an independent procedure. As we pass a probe connected to a handpiece over your skin, the device emits radiofrequency energy to liquefy the fat cells and stimulate the skin’s collagen fibers to contract and tighten. As an added benefit, BodyTite also boosts collagen production over time for firmer, smoother skin.

Procedure

Liposuction usually takes between 1 to 2 hours. The exact length of the procedure varies based on the size and number of areas treated, as well as whether other body contouring procedures occur simultaneously.

Liposuction is a painless experience. Your surgeon may use local anesthesia, twilight sedation, or general anesthesia. After administering the anesthetic, your surgeon will target your trouble zones, ensuring you do not feel any discomfort during the process.

Next, our surgeons will inject tumescent fluid into the treatment site. The tumescent solution contains adrenaline (also called epinephrine), which stops bleeding for approximately four hours, and local anesthetic to numb the area. Tumescent fluid also helps to isolate the fat cells, making it easier to break them apart with less manual force.
Your surgeon will make one or more small incisions, just large enough to insert the liposuction cannula. The incisions are approximately the size of a pencil eraser. Whenever possible, our surgeons place the cuts discreetly. For example, patients undergoing chin liposuction usually have a tiny incision hidden under the jawline. Through the incisions, your surgeon will access the subcutaneous fat layer.
Next, our surgeons will insert a cannula. The liposuction cannula is a thin metal tube introduced into the fatty tissue. Using a back-and-forth motion, your surgeon will separate the fat cells with the cannula until emulsified. This step makes it easier to remove the fat with suction.
Once they have dislodged the fat cells, our surgeons will extract the fat from the area. The cells pass through a cannula, or thin hollow tube hooked up to a machine-powered suction device. Your surgeon gently removes the fat, leaving the treated area slimmer and defined.
At Clareo Plastic Surgery, our surgeons perform an extra step known as fat equalization. We do this to avoid contour irregularities and rippling after liposuction. We apply vibrating probes to the remaining fat to ensure a smooth, beautiful result. The gentle vibrations cause the fat cells to integrate seamlessly with one another, creating a barrier between the skin and deeper tissues. That prevents wavy skin and dimpling after liposuction — a defect that sometimes occurs when the skin adheres to deeper tissues as it molds to the new body shape.

Non-Surgical Alternatives to Liposuction

Body contouring has come a long way in the last decade. At Clareo Plastic Surgery, we are pleased to offer non-invasive fat reduction as an alternative to liposuction. While the results are gradual and less dramatic than what surgery can accomplish, options such as CoolSculpting, TruSculpt, and BodyTite have made it safer, easier, and more affordable than ever to sculpt your dream body. Additionally, there are no incisions, scars, or downtime.

CoolSculpting, or fat freezing, has led the way in non-invasive fat reduction since 2012. As you lie on our comfortable treatment table, a technician will apply a cold paddle to your skin. During the first five minutes, you may feel suction, tugging, and cold as your skin adjusts to the chilly temperature. The fat cells in the area then freeze and crystallize, causing them to die off. Your body excretes the fat cells over the next few weeks to months. You may need one to three treatment sessions to achieve your desired outcome.

Not a fan of icy cold temperatures? Consider TruSculpt, a painless way to treat excess fat with gentle heat. TruSculpt uses paddles placed over the skin to apply radiofrequency energy. The RF energy heats the fat cells to the ideal temperature to cause apoptosis or cell death. Over time, your body flushes out the destroyed fat cells during its natural excretion process, leaving the treated areas slimmer. Repeat sessions may be necessary for an optimal result.

Recovery, Aftercare, And Results

Liposuction can be, and often is, combined with other plastic surgery procedures – such as a mommy makeover or a tummy tuck. For this reason, the recovery time can vary from person to person. When performed alone, lipo is most often a day surgery (meaning you won’t require an overnight hospital stay).

Unless you have another surgical procedure besides liposuction, you should be able to return home on the same day. Depending on your choice of anesthesia, someone may need to be present to drive you home.

Swelling, bruising, tenderness, and pinpoint bleeding are common after liposuction. Our surgeons may prescribe medication for a more comfortable recovery. They may also ask you to wear a compression garment for the first six weeks after liposuction. Compression garments apply gentle, constant pressure to help your skin adhere to its new contours. Wearing the garment also reduces swelling.

Light activity is beneficial during the first two weeks after your procedure. While you should rest and take it easy for the first 24 hours, taking short walks throughout the day is crucial. Walking promotes blood flow, minimizes swelling, and lowers the risk of blood clots in the legs after surgery. However, you should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities as your body is still in the earliest stage of healing. You can gradually ease into your regular workout routine three to four weeks after your operation.

Follow these tips to facilitate a more comfortable, safe recovery:

  • Avoid smoking
  • Do not eat salty foods
  • Keep the wound clean
  • Ask for help around the house
  • Avoid heavy lifting and bending
  • Wear your compression garment
  • Take short walks every few hours
  • Wear SPF to help the scars fade nicely
  • Drink plenty of water to alleviate swelling
  • Eat small, healthy meals throughout the day
  • Consider taking arnica pills to reduce bruising
  • Attend all follow-up appointments as scheduled
  • Take all medications as prescribed by your surgeon

Results

Your recovery time will depend on the number and size of the areas treated. However, most patients are back to their normal activities within a few days of their liposuction treatment. You may be asked to wear a compression garment for the first 6 weeks after surgery. This garment can be worn under any type of clothing and is important for your recovery.
Compression garments help your body conform to its new contours while also reducing swelling. Minimal activity is encouraged in the first 1 to 2 weeks after your procedure. Light walking can be beneficial during this time to help promote blood flow and minimize swelling. In 3 to 4 weeks, you can gently begin to ease back into your regular workout routine by engaging in more strenuous activities and exercises. It usually takes about 6 weeks for your results to show. The swelling will increase for approximately 3 days after the procedure and then decrease week-by-week. Patients will not notice a substantial improvement in their figure until about 3 weeks after the procedure. By 6 weeks, you will see results. However, subtle improvement and skin tightening continue for 6 months. Clareo Plastic Surgery serves patients from all over the Boston area including Newtown, Brookline, Needham, and more.

Maintaining Your Liposuction Results

Once removed, the fat cells do not grow back. Liposuction will change your fat distribution, meaning the treated areas will always have fewer fat cells. However, fat cells do not have a limit as to how much they can enlarge. Therefore, liposuction will not stop you from gaining or losing weight. If you maintain a stable weight, your liposuction results should stand the test of time.

FAQs

There is little-to-no discomfort during the actual procedure. Pain can vary during the recovery, ranging from mild to moderate in most cases. Your surgeon may prescribe pain medication, although small areas such as the chin typically do not require anything but over-the-counter pain relievers.

Scarring, infection, seroma, rippling, and blood pooling under the skin are a few of the risks associated with liposuction. In cases when general anesthesia is utilized, risks such as pulmonary or respiratory complications are possible. In the hands of our board-certified surgeon and anesthesiologists, serious risks are exceedingly rare.

Your surgeon’s anesthesia recommendation depends on the specific body part and volume of fat removed. Smaller areas, such as the chin, may only require local anesthetic. Treating one or more large areas may require general anesthesia. Finally, pairing liposuction with skin removal surgeries such as a tummy tuck or arm lift will necessitate general anesthetic.

It is a good idea to have someone drive you home if you had a significant amount of fat removed. If you had general anesthesia, a ride home will be mandatory since grogginess can last for up to 24 hours. Read the pamphlet on any medications prescribed before getting behind the wheel.

The liposuction scars are generally tiny and barely perceptible once healed. Patients with a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring and those that experience complications such as infection are more likely to have visible scarring. Everyone heals differently.

Your surgeon may advise sleeping on your back with your head elevated. However, the best sleeping position for you will depend on the areas you had liposuction. For example, flank or buttock liposuction requires that the patient avoids putting pressure on the areas until healed.

In approximately six weeks you will see the difference after lipo. It takes six months for all the swelling to disappear, the skin tightening to complete, and to see the final result.

If you are in good health, within 25% of your ideal body weight, and have one or more areas of fat that are bothersome to you, yes

Liposuction candidates must be aged 18 or older. With that said, your skin quality is a more important factor in determining your candidacy than your age. Younger individuals usually have better skin elasticity than mature patients, allowing the skin to retract nicely around their new body contours.

The SAFELipo technique is used. Tumescent solution is placed into the area to be treated. This minimizes the bruising of the procedure. Then the fat is separated using a liposuction cannula. Next, the fat is aspirated with lipo. Finally, the fat is equalized using a cannula. This technique minimizes the risk of contour irregularities, skin damage, and bruising.

SAFE stands for Separation, Aspiration, and Fat Equalization. Using this multi-step method, our surgeons extract the fatty tissue and then redistribute the remaining fat so the treated area has a smooth look, free of dimples, lumps, or bumps.

The remaining fat cells can enlarge if you do not stick to a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Hormonal changes, aging, pregnancy, and certain medications can also contribute to weight gain. While liposuction is a once-in-a-lifetime event for most patients, it can be repeated if necessary.

Liposuction is not for pregnant women or nursing mothers because of the anesthetic and medications prescribed. However, it is hugely popular among mothers looking to get rid of stubborn fat that remains after giving birth.

Applying tumescent fluid, or wetting solution, makes it easier for your surgeon to manually break up the fat cells. Wet liposuction is considerably gentler on the tissues, which promotes an easier recovery. There is also less bruising and bleeding.

Liposuction is not a weight-loss solution; It is a body contouring procedure. While some patients notice a dip when they step on the scale, the effects are usually more apparent when looking in the mirror or trying on clothes.

The average cost of liposuction in Boston is $2,000 to $8,000. The type of liposuction, choice of anesthetic, surgeon fee, and the number of areas treated are just some factors that play a role in pricing. You will receive a custom price quote during your consultation.

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure and so is not covered by insurance.

Financial tools such as CareCredit are available to qualifying patients. This works just like a credit card, allowing you to pay your balance over time.

Liposuction is not for patients that are significantly overweight. The best candidates are physically fit and fall within a normal BMI range.

Liposuction may be combined with body contouring procedures such as a mommy makeover or a tummy tuck. It also works well with BodyTite for patients interested in non-invasive skin tightening.

The recovery time varies from person to person. As a general rule, the smaller the area and the less fat removed, the quicker the recovery.

Most patients return to work in three to five days. Plan on additional downtime if you have other procedures at the same time.

As a standalone procedure, liposuction is a day surgery (meaning an overnight hospital stay is not required).

Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedureit is a body contouring procedure. You will notice little change on the scale; you will see the effects of lipoplasty in the mirror and feel them when wearing clothes.

Now’s the perfect time to look and feel your best.
