BOSTON PLASTIC SURGERY
Very rarely, the breast implant shell can break. This is called implant rupture and it can occur in both saline and silicone implants. In saline implants, implant rupture is obvious because the breast will lose volume and deflate. With silicone implants, however, rupture can be suspected by examination and diagnosed through imaging. Although the silicone gel used today does not leak into the body if the implant ruptures, we nonetheless recommend that patients have their implants removed and new ones placed, if desired.
Breast augmentation surgery is not without risk, and one of the most common complications is called capsular contracture. Capsular contracture occurs when the capsules that form around all breast implants become thick, firm, and contract around the implant. This condition can cause the breast to feel firm and the implant to move high on the chest wall. It can also cause pain and discomfort. When this happens, we recommend that the capsule and implant be removed and the implant is replaced.
Some women who choose breast revision surgery simply want a new implant size, shape, or type. Other women who have aesthetic breast surgery such as a breast lift and/or breast augmentation, will want a second surgery to “refresh” their results. This is particularly true for women who experience weight loss, pregnancy or aging after their first breast surgery. And some women who may not have been happy with their initial cosmetic result choose a secondary breast procedure to achieve a different outcome.
Breast revision surgery is a highly personalized procedure. During your consultation for a breast revision Boston plastic surgeons at Clareo Plastic Surgery will create a custom-tailored surgical plan based on your breast anatomy and cosmetic goals. Depending on your needs, you may benefit from a secondary breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, or a combination of breast surgery procedures. Your Boston breast revision surgeon will work with you to identify which procedure(s) will help you create the look you want while correcting any cosmetic or functional issues.
During breast revision surgery Boston plastic surgeon, Dr. Tantillo will use precise surgical techniques to minimize blood loss and reduce the risk of complications. Rest is encouraged to help your body heal, although you should be able to perform most daily tasks right away – such as showering, brushing your teeth, and other general grooming. Light walking during the first 1-2 weeks of your recovery can also be beneficial to improve blood circulation and facilitate healing. After about 6 weeks, your swelling should be almost completely resolved and you will be able to see the results of your procedure. Your scars may still be pink or red but will improve over time, and should fade significantly by 1 year. Clareo Plastic Surgery serves patients from all over the Boston area including Newton, Needham Brookline, and more.
A breast revision is any aesthetic breast surgery for a patient who has had aesthetic breast surgery in the past. Most often, breast revision is performed for patients who have previously had breast implant surgery. Reasons patients want a breast revision include to change implant size and/or to lift the breasts, typically after having children. Revision is also performed to treat capsular contracture, implant malposition, or implant leak.
